Museum of Abandoned Area in 2115

Intro:

I went to Tenement Museum and participated the tour of Hard Time. We stood in front of the door of 97 Orchard Street, it is September 23rd, 2015. Behind the door, we are transported to 1863, and be placed at the German-Jewish Gumpertz family and the Italian-Catholica Baldizzi family, who successively suffered through the Panic of 1873, and the Great Depression during 1929-1933.at the German-Jewish Gumpertz family and the Italian-Catholica Baldizzi family, who successively suffered through the Panic of 1873, and the Great Depression during 1929-1933.at the German-Jewish Gumpertz family and the Italian-Catholica Baldizzi family, who successively suffered through the Panic of 1873, and the Great Depression during 1929-1933.

I love to visit historical sites since I was a child. I went to the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, and many other historical celebrities’s former residences. I feel surreal when you stand in a historical site: the layout furnitures and objects is exact the same based on that time or the specific person. You still can see an ashtray on the table, you can imagine the person who was sitting there with a burning cigarette. The passage of time doesn’t leave any concrete experience for you but only those static items. It be reshaped in the visitor’s mind to travel to there and get the senses from vision, sound, smell, touch and imaginationyou but only those static items. Visiting Museum of Abandoned Area

Luckily, a magical medicine make me still alive in 2115. Today is September 26th, 2115. It is a sunny Saturday in New York. My (probably great grandchild)child who are taking a class called Cabinets of Wonder in her school. I need to go with her to the Museum of Abandoned Area(MoAA).

MoAA is a museum that collection all those Abandoned Area all around the world based on chronology. The range of MoAA’s collection is huge, from natural places, such as forest, river, island to urban sites, such as park, school, factory, etc. Many Monuments around this city are belong to MoAA. We decide to go to 721 Broadway in Manhattan which is the school that I went to when I was young. The school was moved to another campus in an island, so this building was abandoned in 2050. In 2100, it was reopened as a monunment site of MoAA.

2.  Reception

The building is kept as same as 100 hundred year ago, but street view is already entirely different. When visitor get in the door at 721 Broadway entrance, the front desk person/or robot will take you to a dark room. In this dark room, you are automatically logged in into the system by using face ray. Your personal archives are storage in this system, including the emails, text message, social media posts, networks(contact) related to this space. You also could go to visit your friends’ tour history if they turn on it as “Public” . Your tour is more personal based on these social identity.

3.  Tour

Visitor will sit in a chair while the servant naturally give you a glasses-style headset and a wearable watch. You can see yourselves’s profile in the pop-up window in glasses. After encountering a 10 seconds gravity-free condition, you down to a 4D space.

In this space, you need to choose a year by touch the specific year in your timeline.

I go to the year in August 24th, 2014, where suddenly a lots hologram images around me as I were in the environment that day. The day is back to the orientation day in ITP for all new students. The sound surrounding me are the crowded noise from these conversations. You can move the chair handle to turn around and go forward/back to talk to a specific person, or go to different room.

Back to the menu, I choose another random date in 2015. After click, the food around lounge area shows up, the smells of pizza is so good.

A guy shout out: “Social Hour! Food is coming!”

Then I move to the end of the line where is near resident office. When I looked into this office, no people here at this moment, but there are some pop-up dots are floating around in the air. When I touch one of them, it shows up a specifc resident’s memory map and profile. I decide to not go to the office but go through people(actually hologram video) to get the food, and physically, a pizza is already in my right hand.

I didn’t meet other groups in this tour, because we choose a different date to experience.

4. MoAA Gift Shop

After around 2 hours, I’m notified by the timer in the glass that only 10 mins left in this tour.

There is an pop-up window for two options: Go to Gift Shop or Go Back to Entrance.

I decide to go to Gift shop, there is some souvenirs which are generated based on this tour. I can grab it by touching the items and putting in my shopping cart(an icon located in the menu). The souvenirs includes photo from facebook, data viz card, 3d printing “social hour” pizza, a diorama of a specific classroom and so on.

5. Leave

A pop-up window shows up and asking:

“Are you ready to leave?”

I said yes.

The screen is fading out and after 10 seconds, I’m in the dark room again with dim lighting. I pick up my shopping stuff and check-in stuff and leave.
